I am Director of Medical Museion and a Professor in the Public Health Department at the University of Copenhagen. Medical Museion is also part of the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research.
My job is to orchestrate this exceptional museum, which combines adventurous research with innovative exhibitions, events and other public activities. We aim to re-imagine medicine and health (past, present and future), both for and with a wide range of visitors and interest groups.
My research is focused on the enduring significance of museums, with a particular concern for their role as trusted institutions for learning and cultural engagement. Using Medical Museion as a site of practice and investigation (for active learning), I’m interested in how institutions like this can provide bridges between academia other parts of society, especially with health and medicine in mind.
Until 2022, I worked at the charitable foundation Wellcome in London, where I helped establish Wellcome Collection, directing its first decade of programming from 2007. While there, I also led international cultural initiatives and oversaw a transdisciplinary research hub. I regularly write and speak on museums as well as the intersection of art, science and the humanities.
